一週間ぶりの更新となりますが、今日はニュースを読んでいきたいと思います。

 

タイトルは“Imperial couple visits tsunami-hit areas”

 

天皇皇后両陛下が宮城県石巻市で漁業関係者を追悼された記事です。

以下、NHK WORLD Newsの引用です。

Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko have visited a memorial for people [who perished in the massive tsunami （that hit coastal areas of northeastern Japan in 2011.）]

主格の関係代名詞が二つ含まれますので、それぞれが修飾する先行詞を色付けし、各関係詞節をカッコでくくりました。

修飾関係に忠実に訳すと
「天皇皇后両陛下が、 [（2011年に日本の東北地方沿岸部を襲った）巨大津波により亡くなった]方々の慰霊碑をご訪問されました。」

 

・自動詞perish：突然亡くなる

これは事故や災害で急に亡くなってしまった時に使われる単語なのでニュースに頻出ですが、非常に心の痛む単語です。

The imperial couple visited the monument in Ishinomaki City, Miyagi Prefecture, on Thursday morning.
The visit is part of a tour of areas devastated by the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami as well as the ensuing nuclear accident.

・他動詞devastate：Oを荒廃させる、Oを徹底的に破壊する

関係代名詞の目的格whomは、元は人称代名詞の目的格themなので、カンマ以下は二文にすると以下のようになります。

As residents looked on, the imperial couple bowed deeply in front of the memorial and prayed for the victims.

・接続詞as SV：SがVしている時

接続詞asには沢山の用法がありますが、この文では時を表しています。

whenとの違いは、asは同時性が強いこと。

本文ではas節のresidents（＝住民）がlook on（＝見守る）するのと、主節のthe imperial couple（＝両陛下）がbow（＝お辞儀する）のが同時に行われていることになります。

よって「市民が見守る中、両陛下は慰霊碑の前で深々と一礼して、犠牲者を追悼されました。」と訳せます。

After the ceremony, the Emperor and Empress walked over to a group of elderly people in wheelchairs who were there to welcome them.
They asked the well-wishers to take care of themselves and thanked them for waiting in the cold.

・名詞well-wisher：好意を寄せる人、支持する人

この場合は寒い中両陛下を出迎えて沿道で見守った、車椅子のお年寄りの方々を指しています。

皇居で一般参賀が行われた時などにも祝賀に訪れる人々が沢山いますよね。そのようなニュースの際にも用いられる単語です。

 

 

個人的に石巻とは強力な縁と強い思い入れがあり今も足を運ぶので、今回はこのニュースをピックアップさせて頂きました。

災害や事故に関連する単語、できることなら使わずに済めばよいのですが、世界を見渡してもそうはいかないのが現実です。

「日本人として、一人の大人として、覚えておかなければならない責任のようなものを感じます。」

これはある生徒さんの言葉ですが、とても印象的でした。
